Civil War at Sea: Boats in Battle
November 7, 2014 |
Commemorate the sesquicentennial of the American Civil War, and its defining moments, with a family program at Macculloch Hall Historical Museum (MHHM) taking place on Friday, November 7, 2014. Through projects using Lego© blocks and maps, families can learn more about the Battle of Port Royal during this engaging family program that takes place on the actual anniversary date of the 1861 naval battle. During the activities families can work together and learn why the battle was so significant in New Jersey history, and to the Union forces during the American Civil War. Although the Battle of Port Royal took place in South Carolina, two New Jerseyans have strong connections to it. Flag Officer Samuel Francis DuPont commanded the Union’s armada, which was an important part of General Winfield Scott’s Anaconda Plan, utilizing seventy-seven ships, more than any prior U.S. armada. A victory at
Port Royal would have allowed Union forces to successfully block the southern
ports by providing a refueling station along the coast for Union ships. Another New Jersey native, George Macculloch’s grandson Henry Miller, was on board the “USS Mohican”, one of the ships in the armada. During its journey south Lieutenant Miller led a rescue party and saved the lives of twenty-six sailors from another ship in
the group that was caught in a storm.
After learning about the events of the Battle of Port Royal, using a large floor map, families will look at examples then work as a team to build Lego© models of the forts that protected Port Royal Sound, or one of the vessels that were in the Union’s armada. At the end of the program, families can visit the newly opened exhibit “The Civil War Through the Eyes of Thomas Nast”. Nast illustrated battles, Union and Confederate troop movements, and their activities throughout the Civil War. He also captured the poignancy of those back home, who worried about their family members in combat. Nast covered both the home and battle fronts; his work was the main source of information about the war for many people. Families can view these images and see how battles were depicted before modern media such as television or the mass use of photographs and images on the internet.
Families can choose from a morning, 10 am - 12 pm, or an afternoon, 1 - 3 pm, session. The cost is $6 per child for Museum members or $8 per child for non-members. No charge for accompanying adult. Pre-registration is required. Register by phone at (973) 538-2404 ext. 16 or by email cwinslow@maccullochhall.org
