Conversations on Architecture: “Wire Works”

January 13, 2015

In 2007, designLAB Architects and Landworks Studio were engaged in a public-private consortium to transform a 19th-century abandoned factory along the Blackstone River (in Worcester, Massachusetts) into a historical museum and a center for culture and entertainment. However, tragedy struck in 2009 when the factory burned to the ground just before the start of construction.

This past year, the project was resurrected but with a new program: Diverse landscaping will surround a new visitor center and exhibit building showcasing the cultural, manufacturing, and environmental history of the site and river. Join designLAB founder Robert Miklos FAIA and partner Sam Batchelor AIA, together with Landworks Studio founder Michael Blier, as they present the research, sketches, and models behind this visionary adaptive-reuse effort. This informative session will demonstrate that it is possible to build a contemporary visitor center and exhibit building while celebrating the heritage of the former largest wire-manufacturing facility in the United States.
