Downtown Revival Tour (Providence Preservation Society)

Providence is emerging as a national leader in sustainable design as seen in both the Providence Arcade and George C. Arnold Building's renovation into modern lofts. Opened as our nation's first indoor shopping mall in 1828, the Arcade later appeared on PPS's Most Endangered Properties List three times between 2009-2011. The building re-entered the spotlight when it reopened in 2014 with 17 micro retail spaces on the main level and multi-size lofts on its upper floors. Developed by Evan Granoff, the Arcade's success has inspired other cities around the country to experiment with affordable micro-loft apartments.
Solidifying Providence's reputation for micro-living, is the George C. Arnold Building -- winning the prize for downtown's narrowest building with a depth of only 12.5ft. A creative solution was needed to save the Arnold, on PPS's Most Endangered Properties List for three straight years after a fire in 2009. Working with the Providence Revolving Fund, developers Lori Quinn and David Stem saw an opportunity, just as Arnold had when he first built on the narrow plot in 1923. It is currently undergoing renovation into 2 commercial spaces on the first floor, while the second and third floors will be split into 3 apartments: one two-level, market-rate apartment, and two affordable micro lofts.
