April 10-11, 2015

CHARLESTON, S.C. – April 6, 2015 - The American College of the Building Arts is pleased to announce its 11th Annual Masters of the Building Arts Festival, taking place Friday, April 10 and Saturday, April 11, 2014. The event celebrates the extraordinary skill and artistry of master craftspeople and the durability of traditional building techniques.

This year’s theme, The Modern Artisan, highlights the techniques passed down by skilled craftsman who turned basic needs into objects of delight that inspire, excite and enthrall.  Members of the building arts community as well as guest artisans and professionals from around the country will come together for professional workshops, lectures and training, culminating with the MBA Festival on Saturday, April 11th from 10am-5pm. All events are free and open to the public.

On Friday, April 10th, ACBA will kick off the two-day Hand Tool Event presented by Lie-Nielsen Toolworks and featuring master wood worker, Roy Underhill, of PBS’s The Woodwright’s Shop. Lie-Nielsen will have their full line of hand tools on site to demonstrate everyday woodworking techniques, useful to both the professional and recreational artisan. The event is free, no reservations required. In addition, The College will be hosting several elementary and middle school field trips.  Their focus will be traditional brick making techniques - from raw clay to sanded bricks.

The Masters of the Building Arts Festival will take place at the College’s downtown campus at the Old Charleston District Jail, 21 Magazine Street, Charleston, from 10am-5pm on Saturday, April 11th. The event is designed to engage the public in the history and art of traditional buildings and the built environment.  Attendees will have an opportunity to interact with guest artisans from around the country demonstrating their crafts and to participate in more than a dozen lectures on preservation, new construction, architecture, and decorative arts.  Artisans include: journeyman blacksmith Tim Miller, Scagloiola, making plaster look like marble by Jim Gloria of the Totts Gap Art Institute, Chehaw River Woodwork will construct a finished dining room table from raw wood in one day,  Masters of Plaster will demonstrate serious plastering techniques, the Midwest Tool Collectors Association, and a roofing demonstration sponsored by Huss Construction to name just a few.

More than a dozen experts will share their knowledge in lectures throughout the day including: Reconstructing the Proto-Doric Temple: New Ideas on a Theory of Origin by University of Notre Dame professors Richard Economakis and Kevin Buccellato.Rise and Fall of Charleston Trolleys, 1859-1938 by Nicholas Butler, noted Charleston historian.Masters of the Building Arts: The Role of Craftsmanship in Design by Academy Award winning documentarian,  Marjorie HuntWashington National Cathedral: Construction and Repair after the Earthquake of 2011 by James Shepherd, Director of preservation and Facilities, Washington National Cathedral, Washington, DC

You may order tickets online or by them day-of.
