Sustainable Development: Principles and Practices for Green Communities

December 4-5, 2007

Sustainable or “green” development has steadily evolved from scattered demonstration building projects to more mainstream development practices increasingly applied at a community level. The last several years have seen the emergence of an expanded body of practical experience for integrating the process of community development with the natural environment. Sustainable community development is rapidly proving itself as both cost-effective and highly desirable in the marketplace.

This newly redesigned ULI workshop will draw on best practices to deliver practical strategies to plan, design, develop, and market community development projects that are both economically viable and environmentally responsible.

Highlights:

  • Understanding and defining the principles of sustainable community development.
  • Progressive site planning, low-impact design (LID) strategies, and green infrastructure strategies.
  • Economics of sustainable community development.
  • Implementation and execution strategies.

Who Should Attend:
Real estate developers, designers, policy makers, appraisers, realtors, finance specialists, and other professionals interested in gaining an understanding of sustainable community development—the principles, economics and environmental benefits.

Overview:

  • Defining sustainable community development
  • Developing community-level sustainable development practices: the role of the vision and principles
  • How sustainable development affects the bottom line
  • Measuring sustainability
  • Environmentally-sensitive site design and planning constructs
  • Meeting the market: developing and designing for a more environmentally-conscious consumer
  • Guest lectures and presentation
