Preservation in the US: 50 Years On

March 29 - April 15, 2016

Call for Papers:

The Noreen Stonor Drexel Cultural and Historic Preservation program at Salve Regina University invites proposals for individual papers as well as complete sessions for its upcoming conference (October 13-15, 2016) on the theme “Preservation in the US: 50 Years On.” The purpose of this conference is to identify and discuss the successes and failures of doing preservation on this, the 50th anniversary of the National Historic Preservation Act. Papers on any aspect of preservation (e.g. architectural history, archaeology, preservation planning/policy) are welcome. Papers could address specifically American aspects of preservation or just as easily approach topics that are more international in scope but which have nevertheless changed significantly since the mid-1960s, including material conservation. The passage of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) in 1966 was a defining moment for historic preservation in the United States. Through the creation of institutions like State Historic Preservation Offices and the National Register of Historic Places, the act marked the entry of the federal government into what had been more localized preservation efforts. The ensuing five decades have seen a wide variety of outcomes, most of which are the consequences – intentional as well as unintentional – of relationships involving both the private and public sectors. As we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the NHPA, it is important to reflect on this history, as well as to envision how the relationship between the NHPA and historic preservation might look in the future. Proposals will be accepted for individual papers, complete panels and student lightning talks. The deadline to submit proposals is April 15, 2016. Notice of acceptance will be made on a rolling basis and no later than June 1, 2016. The conference is presented by Salve Regina University in partnership with the Newport Restoration Foundation.
