An introduction on how to formulate and apply restoration mortars in the field
Historic Mortars, NHL Mortars, Natural Cements, Pointing & Infilling – Workshop

An introduction on how to formulate and apply restoration mortars in the field

Led by Jonathan Appell & Randy Ruth

Monday, May 16th , and Tuesday, May 17th
9 a.m. to 4 pm each day

At the Village Cemetery- Ancient Section
1 Marsh Street, Wethersfield, CT 06109

This is a stand -alone workshop and there is no prior knowledge or prerequisite required to attend.

The goal of this workshop event is to educate the attendants on the many varying aspects relating to all forms of historic mortars, infilling, consolidation and related treatments.

This workshop will take place on the 2 days following the basic gravestone and monument conservation workshop.

Although this workshop will be conducted in a historic burying ground the theory,
principles and techniques are applicable to all historic structures composed from stone, or historic structures, which have masonry components.

The vast majority of masonry and mortar currently in use in modern times, is composed from a base of Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC). Historically, many other types of cement binders have been employed prior to the invention of OPC, based materials, widely available today. This workshop will focus on the use of historic cements to make sympathetic repairs to masonry via mortars and grouts that contain no OPC.

Topics to be covered will include:

Focus on the history of cements, including their evolution in composition and usage over the past 2000 years.

When considering application, the influence of various components of a mortar on its
workability, permeability and strength.

What cements are currently and their appropriateness for particular plications.
Including:

European Roman Cements and domestically produced Natural cements

Natural Hydraulic Lime (NHL) of various brands and strengths

Pozzolanic Hydraulic Lime (PHL)

Non-Hydraulic lime

How sands and aggregates, size, shape and chemical composition affect mortars and infill materials.

Composite patching, how it differs from pointing mortar.

Color matching of mortar and infilling,

Why its so difficult to get a perfect match and how.

Injection and gravity fed grouts, how to formulate, mix and apply to stone and into cracks
Consolidation options of soft, weak and eroded stone

Surface treatment and water repellants, the god the bad and the ugly

Workshop Logistics:

This will be a hands on event in which we will discuss formulas (mix design) and apply various kinds of mortar and composite patching materials.

Attendants will learn by watching the process of mortar creation and application into eroded stone to replace lost sections.

We will learn process of repointing historic masonry, including joint preparation, formulation and aftercare.

Injection grouts, gravity fed grouts and related options of crack filling will be demonstrated.

Attendants will all have a chance to mix and apply all of the mortars and composite patching materials.

Each attendant will receive a binder with extensive printed materials.

Lunch will be provided on both days.

Bottled water will be provided.

There are modern rest room facilities on the site.

The workshop will be a hands-on interactive event, meaning that all who attend can
Help perform the work, photograph, or just watch as they choose.

The workshop will be limited to 15 attendants.
