Medina County Museums Open to the Public Sunday
May 22, 2016 |
MEDINA COUNTY, Ohio --Medina County History will be on display during the first-time History Day from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 22. In a format similar to the Fall Foliage Tour, there will be 16 different stops open throughout the county, highlighting 17 organizations.
A tour map will be available at each of the museums and a brief description may help make the decision, especially if handicapped accessibility and nearby parking are a concern. Each stop will feature tour guides and information. Some will have refreshments for sale. Many will have items such as books of local history, posters and other history-related items available to buy.
“We are so excited that 16 places will be open that day, considering this is our first event,” said Roger Havens, president of the Wadsworth Area Historical Society. “People will be able to pick several places to visit during that 6-hour period and then visit other museums in the years to follow.”
You can start anywhere along the way. The first stop: Heritage Farm, 4613 Laurel Road, will not only have its mid-1800s farmhouse museum open, but will also open all of its outbuildings with artifacts donated by community members. There will be a petting farm with animals from Spring Mist Farm and a spinning wheel manned by Nancy Page. Inside the big red barn there will be freshly made popcorn, hot dogs and beverages for sale. All of the books covering local history will be for sale along with watercolor prints and scenic postcards.
Liverpool Township Historical Society boasts an 1895 train depot, locomotive and caboose at its museum at 6615 Center Road, Valley City. In interesting display on the tradition of cigar making in the township is featured. The site is handicapped accessible and a variety of items is available for sale.
Hinckley’s Historical Society at 1634 Center Road, in the heart of Hinckley, has several themed rooms filled with antiques and collectibles, as well as a research room for family and property research. Because it is on the second floor, it is not handicapped accessible.
The Weymouth Preservation Society, 3314 Myers Road, Weymouth, is housed inside a former school and the featured display is “Life in the Countryside,” an exhibit with 200 artifacts depicting 19th century life in Medina County’s villages. It is handicapped accessible.
Other stops include: the Granger Historical Society, 1261 Granger Road; the Wadsworth Historical Society, 161 High St., Wadsworth; Seville Historical Society, 70 W. Main St., Seville; the Northern Ohio Railway Museum at 5515 Buffham Road, Seville, is also hosting the newly formed Chippewa Lake Historical Society at its site.
The Westfield Historical Society will be at 6701 Greenwich Road, Westfield Center; The Lodi/Harrisville Historical society is at 302 Railroad St., Lodi; Spencer’s Historical Society is at 112 N. Main St.; Chatham Historical Society has three separate museum buildings at 5332 Avon Lake Road, Chatham; the Little Wiz Fire Museum will be open at 326 E. Smith Road, Medina; the Medina Town Hall & Engine House Museum is at 50 Public Square, Medina and the Medina County Historical Society is at 206 N. Elmwood St., Medina.
