The Great Presidential Election Controversy of 1876: Rutherford B. Hayes versus Samuel Tilden

Political cartoonist Thomas Nast (1840-1902) covered six presidential elections from 1864-1884 during his career Harper’s Weekly. At a time of low literacy rates, Nast’s images were powerful influencers of people’s votes. It may or may not be coincidence that the candidate that Nast supported in each election would go on to win the presidency.
