Expressions of Love @ Decorative Arts Center of Ohio
January 17 - February 28, 2017 |
Expressions of Love is a collection of 19th & 20th century Valentine cards that will be on display at the Decorative Arts Center in Lancaster, Ohio, January 17 – February 28.
Admission is free. Also coming soon to the Decorative Arts Center is the traveling exhibition Circular Abstractions: Bull's Eye Quilts, curated by Nancy Crow and running from February 4 – April 23.
The Decorative Arts Center will feature Expressions of Love, a collection of 19th and 20th century valentine cards from the collection of Dr. George Johnson, a historian and local collector. The collection includes cards with intricate lace detail, war-themed
cards dating back to World War I and nostalgic cards from the 1950s and 60s.
“This exhibit is uniquely moving,” says Trisha Clifford-Sprouse, acting co-director for the Decorative Arts Center. “The look of valentine cards has changed throughout the decades, but the desire to find beautiful, meaningful ways to express love is timeless.”
“The tradition of giving written cards on Valentine’s Day dates to the 1400s,” says Dr. Johnson. “It is one of the longest-standing holidays in the United States and Europe. Before the tradition of written valentines, a typical valentine was sung.”
Dr. Johnson will discuss his collection and answer questions during a lecture on February 12 from 2 – 4 p.m. Guests will be served traditional heart-shaped gingerbread cookies and are encouraged to bring valentines from their own collections to share.
Expressions of Love will be on display in the parlors of the Decorative Arts Center of Ohio. Admission is free for this exhibit and for Circular Abstractions: Bull’s Eye Quilts, which will be on display February 4 – April 23. Dr. Johnson’s lecture is a ticketed event. Advance tickets are $5 for members, $8 non-members, or $10 at the door.
