Preserving NC's Maritime Heritage on Ocracoke Island
April 26 - December 31, 2017 |
Ocracoke Island's Community Square is an iconic maritime heritage site, home to 5 National Register of Historic Places and 2 docks. A century of hurricanes and storms are threatening structures 86-115 years old, including the Will Willis Store & Fish House[ca. 1930 - "the last surviving example of NC Maritime Heritage" - SHPO] and supporting dock. It houses the Ocracoke Working Watermen's Exhibit, a museum dedicated to promoting, preserving and honoring the working maritime traditions of NC. A Restoration Campaign has raised $900K of $1.6M goal. Donations, grants and Foundation support are needed to assure preservation of this site in perpetuity.
