Excelsior Society Day Trips: The Evolution of Modernism on Long Island's Gold Coast
May 19, 2017 |
Hosted by League Trustees Carol Bentel and Caroline Zaleski
The villages of the North Shore of Long Island were the perfect setting for new architectural expression as the Gold Coast's great estates were subdivided and evolved into a modern suburban utopia. Beginning in the 1930s, architects brought a wide range of responses to bear on the modern home. From tactile, organic forms to crisp, airy international style, the houses we will visit reflect a convergence of influences on mid-twentieth century residential design from Catalonian architect and refugee Josep LluĂs Sert to the Long Island-based team of Frederick and Maria Bentel; and from Budapest native George Nemeny to post-modernists Robert Venturi and Charles Moore.
