The conference CONCRETE & CAST STONE IN THE 21st CENTURY: Design, Preservation, & Care of Contemporary & Historic Architecture – sponsored by Technology & Conservation, the MIT Dept. of Architecture's Building Technology Program, and the Boston Society of Architects/AIA's Historic Resources Committee – will provide valuable, practical information for:

- facilities & operations managers of museums & other cultural institutions, education & commercial complexes, & religious properties
- government officials responsible for the care, rehab, and/or continued viability of buildings & public art
- manufacturers & suppliers of components & systems for the preservation, restoration, repair, and/or maintenance of concrete and/or cast stone.
Among the topics to be discussed are:
– the basic properties of concrete and cast stone
– how these material characteristics and interactions need to be considered in specifying concrete & cast stone for buildings, monuments, architectural ornamentation, and outdoor sculpture
– evaluation and inspection techniques
– new developments in manufacturing & fabrication operations and in construction techniques
– current design innovations
– practical, cost-effective strategies for repairing/preserving/restoring structures
– viable approaches to preservation/maintenance planning and to facilities management
– case histories of contemporary and traditional structures
Continuing education credits: AIA members can obtain 17 HSW/LUs for attending the conference. Others will be able to receive a certificate of attendance for continuing education credits.
Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis; deadline for the early registration rate of $420 (U.S.) per person is Jan. 30, 2008. After Jan. 30th, the registration fee is $495 (U.S.) per person. The registration fee includes the conference sessions, luncheons on March 29 and 30, and the March 29 reception. An optional tour on Monday, March 31, 2008, of concrete and cast stone structures in the Boston-Cambridge area is available at no additional charge to conference registrants.
