The National Center for Preservation Technology and Training (NCPTT) will host a three-day symposium on the preservation of  roadside architecture and attractions that are uniquely American.  The symposium will focus on the preservation of these buildings and features that catered to tourists who traveled American roads during the 1920s-1970s.

The symposium will bring together architects, engineers, landscape architects, site managers, conservators, facility managers, and other cultural resource professionals to discuss issues related to the preservation of roadside features, such as:

- Unusual and oversized structures and sculptures
- Roadside attractions and themed parks
- Unique restaurants and gas stations
- Iconic roadside motels
- Neon signs

The symposium is organized by NCPTT, the Friends of NCPTT and the NPS Route 66 Corridor Program.

Presentations:
Presentations will be 30 minutes, including questions. Please submit an abstract of no more than 500 words (excluding figures and references). Abstract should contain: presenter’s full contact information (name, title, organization, address, phone, fax, email), and a 100-word biography for the author and each co-author. We recommend no more than two presenters per presentation.  Presentation abstract deadline is December 1, 2018.  Email notification of accepted presentations will be sent on January 3, 2017.

Presentations will be recorded and resulting videos posted on NCPTT’s website.

Written Papers:
Authors Guidelines ButtionPresenters will be required to prepare a paper for symposium publication. Click here for author guidelines. Deadline for paper submission is March, 16 2018.

Posters:
Posters should be approximately 36 x 40 inches. Please submit an abstract of no more than 500 words (excluding figures and references). Abstract should contain: main presenter’s full contact information (name, title, organization, address, phone, fax, email) and a 100-word biography for the presenter. The poster abstract deadline is January 3, 2018. Email notification of accepted posters will be sent on  January 10, 2018.

Suggested presentations and poster topics include but are not limited to:
- Documentation
- Materials conservation
- Preservation treatments
- Grassroot preservation
- Adaptive reuse
- Site interpretation
- Social, cultural, and historical influences
- Gas stations and brownfield issues
