On this public walking tour, you'll take a nice stroll down Second Avenue (the famed "Yiddish Rialto") with your Lower East Side Jewish Conservancy Guides and explore the historic connections between what is now the East Village and The Lower East Side. See the Second Avenue Deli's "Starwalk" of the Yiddish Theatre. Visit the historic Synagogues of East 6th Street: Community Synagogue, originally St. Marks Luthern Church, and spiritual home of the German congregation that lost 1000 parishoners in the General Slocum disaster. Congregation Adas Yisroel Anshe Meseritz: a tenement-style shul descibed as a "little jewel" by Professor Gerard Wolf in Synagogues of the Lower East Side (1978). |
