Lunch Bite on letters home from Capt. Jonathan Birge,
January 19, 2018 |
Research Services Librarian Michele Lee Silverman discusses a series of letters home from the front from Capt. Jonathan Birge of Connecticut. Written during the fall of 1776 to his wife, the letters describe his regiment’s activities during the difficult New York campaign. Emotions of love and loss are intertwined with details of company activities, troop movements, requests for supplies, sickness and causalities. In this losing battle, death is imminent and the final letter in this collection is from Birge’s commanding officers relaying the sad news of his death. These letters, saved by his family for centuries, reveal the more personal aspects of life in the fight for American independence.
