The History of Carnegie Libraries

March 10, 2018

In honor of Ocean Park Library’s 100th birthday this year, the Conservancy is co-hosting a talk on the history of Carnegie libraries by Ken Breisch, Conservancy board member emeritus and USC professor. Professor Breisch, author of the panoramic and visually stunning American Libraries 1730-1950, will trace the development of Carnegie libraries in the United States and how the Ocean Park branch was funded and built.

The Ocean Park building, built in the Neoclassical style, opened its doors in 1918. The original entry, framed by columns with an arched pediment and a small double staircase, were retained during a major remodel and expansion in 1985. The site was donated by the Tegner family where the original Tegner home once stood.  The Ocean Park Library is the last Carnegie Library remaining in Santa Monica and one of the few small Carnegie libraries still operating in California. It was landmarked in 1977.

Don’t miss this spectacular talk at the Ocean Park Library! This event is free to all. Seating is available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Parking is available in the library lot and on the street.
