History Museum Celebrates Preservation Month with Historical California Bungalow Exhibition

May 10 - June 17, 2018

May is Preservation Month, and to celebrate our local heritage, the Los Altos History Museum is pleased to announce the opening of its exhibit “Dormers to Doors: A Look at a California Bungalow," on display May 10th through June 17th, 2018 in the historic J. Gilbert Smith House. The exhibition will explore the California Bungalow style, and how aspects of the house were inspired by the Arts and Crafts movement of the 20th century.

"The Arts and Crafts movement was an exciting time in architectural and design history," said Deputy Director Heather Farquhar, "and continues to influence choices in our modern homes."

An opening reception will be held on Thursday, May 10th from 4-6pm, with a guided architectural tour of the J. Gilbert Smith house at 4:30pm, led by Farquhar.

Additional programming associated with this exhibition include a second architectural tour on Saturday, May 19th at 10am, and a Preservation Month celebration on Wednesday, May 30th from 4-7pm. The Preservation Month celebration will include Volunteer Recognition awards by the Los Altos History Museum, Preservation awards by the City of Los Altos Historical Commission, and a lecture by Katherine Buss on the Halsey House and Family.

The Halsey House, built in 1923, is located in the Redwood Grove Nature Preserve in Los Altos. The Halsey family planted the landmark redwoods, now nearly 100 years old.

The Los Altos History Museum began in 1977 with the opening of the J. Gilbert Smith House historic farmhouse, built in 1905. In 2001, the Los Altos History Museum opened its modern building next door, which houses the Museum's collections, permanent and changing exhibits, store and administrative offices. The Museum and its grounds are available for rent during evenings and weekends. Its collections are owned by the City of Los Altos and are managed by an independent nonprofit organization, whose staff and volunteers are responsible for all programs and operations.

The Museum and J. Gilbert Smith House are open Thursday through Sunday, from noon-4pm. Admission is free. The gardens, outdoor agricultural exhibits and picnic area are accessible beyond Museum hours.
