Grave Days at Historic Newtown Presbyterian Cemetery

May 15-18, 2018
Grave Days at Historic Newtown Presbyterian Cemetery
Get an Inside Look at Grave Marker Restoration
LimeWorks.us and Craftwork Training Center, in coordination with the Historic Newtown Presbyterian Cemetery Committee and in commemoration of Historic Preservation Month, will host a grave marker cleaning and repair workshop on May 15-18, 2018, from 8:30 am to 3:00 pm daily, at the historic Newtown Presbyterian Cemetery located at 76 N. Sycamore St., Newtown, PA.

Like many burial grounds, the historic Newtown Presbyterian Cemetery relies on dedicated committee members and the surrounding community to assist with beautification, cleanup, and grave marker repairs. Now, during Historic Preservation Month, grave marker enthusiasts, preservation advocates, and conservation specialists will have the opportunity to share their time, talent, and skills while making a difference at the historic Newtown Presbyterian Cemetery. Under the direction of the LimeWorks.us Technical Install Team lead by Chris Hertz and cemetery memorials conservator Robert Mosko, participants will be introduced to the baseline knowledge, theory, techniques, and materials that underpin gravestone preservation. The 4-day joint effort will also include hands-on training in cleaning headstones, repair practices, and resetting fallen monuments. Participants of all skill levels are encouraged to attend.

Grave Days Schedule
Tuesday, May 15, 2018; 8:30 am to 3:00 pm
$100 registration fee (light lunch included)

Conservator Robert Mosko will lead a full-day lecture addressing cemetery safety, subsidence and erosion, landscape restoration and maintenance, types and styles of gravestones, weathering and deterioration processes, and condition assessments and documentation practices. LimeWorks.us conservation mason Chris Hertz will also review the science behind breathable natural hydraulic lime mortars.

Wednesday, May 16, 2018; 8:30 am to 3:00 pm
$50 registration fee (light lunch included)
Work hands-on in the historic Newtown Presbyterian Cemetery as Robert Mosko, Chris Hertz, and the LimeWorks.us Technical Install Team guide attendees in the
applicability, benefits, and use of a selection of masonry repair materials contained in the LimeWorks.us Graveyard Kit. Enthusiasts will also be introduced to basic grave marker cleaning practices and the use of D/2 Biological Solution to clean discoloration and soiling caused by organic growth.

Thursday, May 17, 2018; 8:30 am to 3:00 pm & Friday, May 18, 2018; 8:30 am to noon
$50 registration fee (light lunch included)

Use great materials and get a little help from your friends at LimeWorks.us. Conservation mason Chris Hertz will join Robert Mosko in the field to direct participants in the handling, moving, and resetting of historic gravestones including basic engineering and rigging, raising and lifting sensitive markers, setting techniques, and setting materials and compounds. Participants will also have the opportunity to work beside the LimeWorks.us Technical Install Team as the project progresses.

In further celebration of Historic Preservation Month, the community is invited to attend a guided tour of the historic Newtown Presbyterian Cemetery on Friday, May 18, from 1:00 pm to 2:30 pm. Heritage stories and highlights include local history buff Wilson Dorward’s description of how Hessian soldiers were held captive in the cellar of the Old Newtown Presbyterian Church during the Revolutionary War and young James Slack’s assistance in ferrying George Washington’s troops across the partially frozen waters of the Delaware River. Among the historic figures interred at the Cemetery is William Keith whose stone house served as Washington’s headquarters during the 1776 Battle of Trenton. Participants will also be able to view the completed grave marker restoration work performed by LimeWorks.us and staff will be on-site to answer questions. The walking tour is free and open to the general public.

Participants may register for one, several, or all four days of training. Members of the Newtown Presbyterian Church may attend for free! Call 215-536-1776 to register.
