Basics of Building with Hempcrete Workshop

May 31 - June 2, 2018
Basics of Building with Hempcrete Workshop
Get Your Hemp Hurd On

Craftwork Training Center, in coordination with LimeWorks.us, will host a 3-day workshop on the basics of building with hempcrete on May 31 to June 2, 2018, from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm daily, at 3145 State St., Telford, PA.

As a sustainable building material, hempcrete is a biocomposite made of the inner woody core of the hemp plant mixed with a lime-based binder. The hemp hurd or shiv has a high silica content which allows it to bind well with lime. The result is a lightweight inlaying material ideal for most climates since it combines insulation
and thermal mass. Hempcrete is not used as a structural element; all loads are carried by internal framing. However, as insulating infill between the frame members, hempcrete provides an energy savings of up to 60% when combined in floor, wall, and ceiling applications.

Homes have been built with hempcrete for decades throughout Europe and the trend is establishing roots in the United States too. Hempcrete is a carbon sequestering material that provides optimal indoor air quality and energy efficiency. It’s mold-resistant, rot-resistant, pest-resistant and exceptionally fire-resistant; making it an ideal infill for additions, remodels, retrofits, and new construction from tiny houses to industrial warehouses. Hempcrete is also adaptable for specialty design features like archways and curves. Exterior applications may be finished with a protective lime render coating or stucco. Interior walls may be left natural or covered with lime plaster for a traditional look. All coatings must be breathable and flexible to maintain maximum compatibility and wall health.

The hands-on workshop covers the natural properties and benefits of using hemp hurd as a construction material; mixing ratios for different applications including walls, floors, and ceilings; and forming, tamping, and curing hempcrete properly. Under the guidance of experienced masons from the LimeWorks.us Technical Install Team, participants will also construct a slip form or shuttered wall using hempcrete that’s made by combining water, lime Hempcrete Binder™ from LimeWorks.us, and hemp hurd that’s grown and processed in the United
States.

Call 215-536-1776 to register for the workshop.
