Poplar Forest Presents The Day is Past & Gone: A Trilogy of Slave Life at Poplar Forest

May 19, 2018

FOREST, VA: The Day is Past & Gone: A Trilogy of Slave Life at Poplar Forest, local playwright Teresa Harris’s original trilogy about slave life at Poplar Forest, returns to Mr. Jefferson’s south lawn with new stories on Saturday evening, May 19 at 6:30 p.m. The Day is Past & Gone is sponsored in part by an American Evolution™ marketing grant administered by the Virginia Tourism Corporation.

Written and directed by Teresa Harris, The Day is Past & Gone explores the complexity of surviving in two diametrically opposed worlds in three vignettes—Hannah & Billy: The Talk; Nace Hubbard: Betwixt & Between and Phil Hubbard & Hanah: I am a Man—featuring true stories drawn from real-life experiences of the enslaved men and women portrayed that have been documented in letters and archaeological evidence.

In Hannah & Billy: The Talk, the audience sits in on a conversation between Hannah, Jefferson’s cook at Poplar Forest, and her son Billy. Hannah is at her wits’ end, as they discuss his problems with the overseer and the consequences of pushing back on the system of enslavement. Featuring Delores Marshall and David Saez as Hannah and Billy.

The story of Nace Hubbard told in Nace Hubbard: Betwixt & Between examines the complexity of being caught between two worlds and the juggling act a man had to perform in order to survive in both. Nace had, to some degree, learned how to make the system of slavery work more favorably for him, but faced opposition from his fellow slaves. Featuring Glenwood Wheaton as Nace and Victoria Williams as Edy.

The third story, Phil Hubbard & Hanah: I am a Man, focuses on Phil’s need to maintain his manhood. Phil ran away from Poplar Forest to Monticello to appeal directly to Thomas Jefferson, asking him to intervene in his struggle with Overseer Jeremiah Goodman, who had taken liberties with his wife, Hanah, and was denying him his right to live with her under the same roof. Featuring Quincy Scott as Phil, Janice Benejan as Hanah and Dakota Rogers as Jeremiah Goodman.

The cast also includes dancers Jessica Pollard Andrews and Loricia Battiste. A Q&A with Teresa Harris, the actors and representatives of the Poplar Forest Department of Archaeology and Landscapes will follow the last vignette.

Bring your friends and family—and a picnic dinner and a blanket or chairs—and experience a part of Poplar Forest’s history brought to life. Tickets to The Day is Past & Gone are $15 per person. Reservations are suggested. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit poplarforest.org/events or call the Museum Shop at 434.534.8120.
