JUGGING AND JAWING: HISTORIC AUSTIN HAPPY HOUR AT THE SAXON PUB
July 12, 2018 |
Preservation Austin is excited to present our summer Jugging and Jawing Happy Hour, this time with AIA Austin’s Emerging Professionals! We’re celebrating the Saxon Pub, a South Austin staple beloved by musicians and audiences alike since 1990. Its nightly schedule of incredible local and touring acts has played a defining role in Austin’s evolution into the “Live Music Capital of the World.”
The Saxon’s owner and co-founder Joe Ables, along with Rebecca Reynolds of the music education/outreach nonprofit ALL ATX, will join us to discuss the bar’s history, but also the importance of place and context to Austin’s increasingly threatened music venues. The Saxon Pub itself faced relocation because of development pressures in 2016, before Gary Keller of Keller Williams Realty (and ALL ATX founder) purchased the building for the sole purpose of keeping The Saxon in place.Drinks provided by AIA Austin Emerging Professionals. Come soak up some stories from this iconic venue’s past, and learn more about what we can do to preserve our city’s live music industry and culture. We’ll see you there!
SPEAKERS WILL BEGIN AT 6:15PM. TEXAS' OWN LOVE & CHAOS GOES ON A 6:30PM, ROUNDING OUT THE FULL SAXON PUB EXPERIENCE!
Street parking is limited before 6pm so guests are encouraged to find alternate forms of transportation. AFTER 6pm additional parking is available at South Austin Music and the Genie Car Wash.
Preservation Austin’s "Jugging and Jawing" series celebrates iconic watering holes citywide. Each event features a different venue that’s either been in operation for 30+ years, or that occupies a space that’s housed a long line of venerable drinking establishments. Some prominent, and some out-of-the-way, these places have helped shape Austin’s character for decades. Each one tells a unique story about our history and the diverse cultures that make this city so great.
