DESCRIPTION:
Located on the site of the United States Lighthouse Service's (USLHS) General Depot, the National Lighthouse Museum educates visitors about the history and technology of the nation's lighthouses. Built for the Treasury Department of the US Government, these buildings housed lampists, blacksmiths, clerks, engineers, and inspectors was the national headquarters, testing ground, and distribution center for all materials and equipment used by light keepers and USLHS personnel from 1864 to 1939. Once a lively and bustling site of 18 buildings, only 7 survive today.
TOUR INFO:
Tours will be offered at 1, 2:30, and 3:30 pm on Saturday only and last about an hour. Museum admission FREE. Highlights include the 1869 Administration Building designed by US Treasury Department architect Alfred B. Mullet, 1869 oil vaults, and 1868 lamp shop.
