Three Kings Day at Los Altos History Museum
January 6, 2019 |
Los Altos History Museum hosts an event honoring the Catholic tradition and
Mexican heritage of Juana Briones, the subject of the museum's current
exhibition, "Inspired by Juana: La Doña de la Frontera." Día de los Reyes Magos, a celebration of Three Kings Day, or Feast of the Epiphany, takes place on Sunday,
January 6th, noon-4pm.
"Many Mexican families, both in Mexico and the U.S., celebrate Three Kings Day, marking the end of the twelve days of Christmas and the revelation of Jesus Christ as the Son of God and Son of Man," said exhibit co-curator Dr. Perlita Dicochea.
"The wise men—Gaspar, Melchior, and Balthasar—took a symbolic journey on
camelback following the Star of David to meet the newborn king. They brought
with them gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Every January 6th, the three
kings, or wise men, leave gifts for children inside and around their shoes, as
well as hay or grass for their camels."
Los Altos History Museum will join the tradition by serving traditional Rosca de Reyes, a wreath of sweet bread eaten only on this occasion, and offering ongoing children’s activities. The event is free to the public.
The Los Altos History Museum began in 1977 with the opening of
the J. Gilbert Smith House historic farmhouse, built in 1905. In 2001, the Los Altos
History Museum opened its modern building next door, which houses the Museum's collections, permanent and changing exhibits, store and administrative offices. The Museum and its grounds are available for rent during evenings and weekends. Its collections are owned by the City of Los Altos and are managed by an independent nonprofit organization, whose staff and volunteers are responsible for all programs and operations.
The Museum and J. Gilbert Smith House are open Thursday through
Sunday, from noon-4pm. Admission is free. The gardens, outdoor agricultural exhibits and picnic area are accessible beyond Museum hours. For more
