Spirit of Preservation Gala

Historic 11th Street has been a home for arts, culture and education for more than a century.
In 1898, long before the Performing Arts Center was built, the city's first high school was constructed on the same lot-- which at the time was fields, farms and ranches. Despite criticism that it was ridiculous to build a school “away out in the country,” education flourished and in 2015, the site became a part of the Santa Monica College
Performing Arts Center.
This year, some of the city's first homes were designated as part of 11th Street Historic Bungalow District. From late Victorian to Craftsman and Spanish Revival, these bungalows were once home to Hollywood special effects pioneer Ken Strickfadden, early civic leader Waldo Cowan and locally renowned master builder Joseph Rowe.
