During the time period from the 1930s to the 1960s, Broadway and the surrounding area was the center of San Francisco Bay Area night life. Following World War I, supper clubs, jazz clubs, even strip clubs thrived, and waiters sang Italian arias as they served the food. There was even a famous topless bar or two: remember the Condor?
In the ‘50s, nightclubs became the launching pads for a string of entertainers who would become national icons. It was at the two legendary clubs, The Hungry I and the Purple Onion, that so many careers were launched: Barbra Streisand, Phyllis Diller, Bill Cosby, Joan Rivers, Dick Cavett, Mort Sahl, Lenny Bruce, Jonathan Winters, the Kingston Trio, the Smothers Brothers, Woody Allen, the Limelighters and so many more.
To hear all about it, a panel of personalities from many of the establishments on Broadway will join us to reminisce about those “Golden Days of Entertainment.”
Were you the first to hear Barbra Streisand? Bring your memories of those years to this meeting.
