Discover the History: The Green Book

September 28, 2019
Discover the History: The Green Book
Join us Saturday, September 28 from 3 PM to 4:30 PM for our next Discover the History focusing on The Green Book.

In the not so distant past African Americans traveling on the roads and highways across the U.S., could literally be putting their lives in danger.

Victor H. Green, an innovative postal worker created a “safety” network making it possible for African Americans to travel with little likelihood of encountering threats or a racially charged incident. This “network” was a published directory listing places where Black travelers could find lodging, food, gasoline and other needed services.

Speakers:

Gloria & Solomon Herbert, principals of Black Meetings & Tourism, a Calif. based Media company, will explain the relevancy of the GREEN BOOK concept for today’s Black travelers.

As co-creators and publishers of the soon to be released NEW Green Book, an African American Travel Guide digital directory and Podcast Series by the same name, the Herberts are furthering their commitment to create platforms for presenting the untold stories of People of Color in the United States and around the world.

The Herberts are also executive producers of Today’s Black Traveler, a televised travel show, now in development. They are active in the travel industry and have won numerous awards for their destination marketing programs and travel writing.

Jo Keita of Nubian Tours will share her experiences as the travel coordinator for MOTOWN performers and using the Green Book in arranging travel. Ms. Keita also implemented customer service programming at United Airline addressing cultural diversity.

A special preview clip from “The Green Book Chronicles,” a one hour documentary, currently in development, produced by Calvin Alexander Ramsey and Becky Wible Searles, will be screened at this special Route 66 Discover the History event.

This discussion was made possible by the California Historic Route 66 Association.

This discussion is free of charge and includes free access to our galleries.
