Dovetail Log Construction
March 9-12, 2020 |
In this workshop, learn the art and the craft of dovetail log construction or improve the skills you already have. The dovetail corner is one of the hallmarks of North American log crafting. It was used extensively in the southeastern region of the U.S. and in Québec. The product will be a wood storage shed at the Hidden Trace Farm. Not only will it keep things dry but will also leave a lasting example of modern log dovetail joinery.
Workshop topics will include:
· log selection
· the math behind the compound dovetail
· quick methods of log setup for scribing
· cutting techniques with chainsaw, axe and slick
· adzing
· using jigs for easier layout
MATT DAVIDSON and HIGGS MURPHY will lead the workshop. Matt, owner of Davidson Log & Timber Artisans in Washago, Ontario, is an experienced log builder dedicated to furthering the craft through education and by example. Higgs, a master crafter with 40 years of experience, is also a skilled teacher from Cochrane, AB. Together, they make a great team.
