Growing Up in a Frank Lloyd Wright House

In this multi-media presentation, hear the intertwined stories of two girls growing up in the same Frank Lloyd Wright house 70 years apart. Rochester’s only Frank Lloyd Wright-designed home was built in 1908 for Edward E. Boynton and his 20-year-old daughter Beulah. During its construction, the world-renowned architect was frequently on-site, supervising all details, including the design of the furniture (seventeen pieces still remain in the house). Learn what it was like for Beulah to work with the temperamental architect.
Kim Bixler’s family owned the Edward E. Boynton House from 1977 to 1994. Sharing family photographs, documentary footage and historical research Kim recounts the joys and pitfalls of owning and living in a Wright-designed home. Living with the public’s curiosity, playing hide-and-seek, coping with the habitually leaky roof and managing constant renovations were all part of the experience.

Kim Bixler is the author of Growing Up in a Frank Lloyd Wright House and can be seen in the PBS documentary Frank Lloyd Wright’s Boynton House: The Next Hundred Years. Kim Bixler’s family owned Wright’s prairie-style Edward E. Boynton house (1908) in Rochester, NY from 1977 to 1994. She started giving tours when she was eight years old - sharing Wright’s architectural design details, revealing her favorite hiding spots and dodging the habitually leaky roof. Bixler has traveled the country giving lectures at numerous Wright sites including Taliesin West, Unity Temple, the Darwin Martin House, the Wright-designed Florida Southern College, the Marin County Civic Center, Hollyhock House and many more.
Kim Bixler has authored and edited several books, including Get a Clue: Guide to Cornell University and Ithaca, NY, 365 Great Things About Atlanta, The Cigar Book, Austin from Boston, and My Twin, My Friend.
