Art Deco Society of Washington Member’s Bungalow Tour

February 24, 2008

Tour an ADSW member's bunglow.  This home on Ingomar Street is a double-gabled bungalow constructed in 1916. Designer William Randolph Talbott was a government architect and designer of veterans hospitals. The first owner, Walter C. Brashears, was the home’s builder.

The house has been described variously as a “colonial bungalow” perhaps because of the classic columns on the porch and the high degree of symmetry both inside and outside; as well as a “bungalow on steroids” because of its size relative to many traditional bungalows.

Although the footprint of the house has remained the same, over the years the interior has been reconfigured a number of times. Early changes to the first floor resulted in fewer but larger rooms. A kitchen, breakfast room and butler’s pantry morphed into a large eat-in kitchen. An office and bedroom merged to create a new living room, repurposing the original living room as a grand entrance hall with a massive stone hearth, the defining architectural feature of the house.

The most recent owners have opened up the first floor with some selective elimination of walls to increase sight lines and create a flow more amenable to modern living, while retaining and restoring traditional bungalow features (e.g., wood paneling, rustic columns, and period lighting fixtures). The second floor has been expanded with a rear addition not visible from the street, placing a master suite and a large home office under a pair of gables recalling ones so prominent on the bungalow’s façade.

The intimate scale of the rooms combined with the new open plan makes the house equally inviting for small gatherings of friends and large parties.
