Essex Heritage Presents Trails & Sails: 10 Days of 100+ Free Events across Essex County

September 18-27, 2020

September 9, 2020 – Presented by Essex Heritage, Trails & Sails features more than 100 free events over 10 days, this year held from Friday, September 18th through Sunday, September 27th. Events celebrate the elaborate variety of historic, cultural, and natural resources in the Essex National Heritage Area: the 34 cities and towns of Essex County, a 500 square mile region just north of Boston, MA.

Trails & Sails was created by Essex Heritage 19 years ago to highlight the unique character of the Area by connecting people to its special places. “It is our mission to knit together the exceptional places of Essex County – the places that make this area like nowhere else – in a fun way that inspires residents and visitors to make connections between their lives and these places,” explained Annie Harris, Essex Heritage CEO. “Through programs like Trails & Sails we are enhancing tourism, building partnerships, and engaging people of all ages in sustaining the places that make this region so unique.”

Due to COVID 19, Trails & Sails took new forms to best accommodate visitation & engagement while still practicing safe protocols for both attendees and event hosts. Events being offered this year fall into three categories: Virtual events, Do It Yourself Events, and Small In-Person group events. All of these events are offered for free.

Virtual events include virtual tours, lecture, or demonstrations. All of these virtual events can be enjoyed from the comfort of your own home, wherever you are. Do It Yourself events are activities you can do at your own pace and at your own comfort level. This includes self-guided tours, scavenger hunts, driving or biking tours, and other DIY activities. Many of these DIY activities are offered during all 10 days so you can pick the day and time that works best for you. Small, In-Person group events will look similar to traditional Trails & Sails events but there are several precautions in place to keep everyone safe. This includes limiting the number of attendees, requiring registration in advance, and requiring a face mask at all times whenever possible during the event.

“We are extremely grateful for all the event hosts who chose to participate in Trails & Sails this year. Many went above and beyond in creating new content for their sites to better connect participants with heritage during a challenging time. This has not been an easy few months for heritage organizations. We hope that the community will continue to rally around these sites and stewards by showing support for their work during Trails & Sails.”

These events provide a great way to stay connected with and inspired by the unique resources found in the Essex National Heritage Area.  Visit TrailsAndSails.org to see the complete listing of events. Many events are family-friendly and good for all ages to enjoy. All events are free.

Trails & Sails 2020 is generously sponsored by Eastern Bank and Salem Five Charitable Foundation.
