Phillip Seitz, Curator of History at Cliveden, is set to speak in the Cliveden Carriage House on Wednesday, March 12th at 7:00PM. Following a sold out event at the Germantown Historical Society, Cliveden has decided to re-offer Seitz’s highly publicized “Tales of Enslavement: New Research from Cliveden and the Chew Family Papers” lecture. The lecture will be offered to the public free of charge and will address the issues of slavery and freedom in Philadelphia.
The Chew family was among the largest slaveholder in Pennsylvania and Delaware. Through his research with the Chew Family Papers, which are now located at the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, Seitz has been able to shed light on the conditions of slavery in the City of Brotherly Love. Come to find out more about where and when it happened, along with the stories of some remarkable individuals.
Cliveden, located at 6401 Germantown Avenue in Philadelphia, was the site of the 1777 Battle of Germantown. As George Washington’s army marched up Germantown Avenue, Cliveden was converted into a makeshift British fortress during the battle. Also home to seven generations of the Chew family, Cliveden is a site which highlights the story of America’s continuing struggle for freedom. Offering house tours from April through December, as well as year round programming including concerts, lectures, workshops, and annual celebrations, Cliveden serves as a central resource center for Philadelphia’s historic Northwest community.
Cliveden is easily accessible by public transportation and nearby parking is also available. For further information about the event and ticket reservations, please call 215-848-1777 or visit Cliveden on the web at www.cliveden.org. Seating for the talk is limited.
