Dallas on the Square (Free Open House)

July 10, 2021
Dallas on the Square (Free Open House)
Open House for two historic gems along Court Square in Dallas, North Carolina (30 minutes outside of Charlotte). Both properties ideal for adaptive reuse!

Join Ted Alexander, Preservation North Carolina’s Western Office Regional Director, and Joe Yarbrough, Broker/Realtor with Gilleland Realty, as they host a free OPEN HOUSE for the public at the Dallas Jail and Smyre-Pasour House on Saturday, July 10th from 1-4pm.

The Dallas Jail (108 East Trade Street, Dallas, NC 28034): One of the most high profile and distinctive buildings in downtown Dallas! Amazing adaptive reuse space and ideal for those looking for an urban feel within the charm of a small southern town.

The Dallas Jail is a contributing structure in the Dallas National Register Historic District, and eligible for state and federal historic rehabilitation tax credits. The jail’s unique interior features include barrel-shaped corrugated metal ceilings, interesting markings on the jail walls, and a centered metal spiral staircase. The property would make an interesting themed restaurant, office, retail space or even a residence. As a locally designated landmark, the property’s new buyer is eligible to apply for a 50% ad valorem property tax deferral.

The Smyre-Pasour House (113 North Holland Street, Dallas, NC 28034): Built ca. 1847, the Smyre-Pasour House is one of the few remaining antebellum Greek Revival-style houses in Gaston County. The house and well house are contributing structures in the Dallas National Register Historic District and are eligible for state and federal historic rehabilitation tax credits.

Set flush with the street and facing the former Gaston County Courthouse in the heart the Court Square, the yard is ample enough for sensitively designed parking. Extensive stabilization work is being completed, which will allow for easier rehabilitation and adaptive re-use. The house would make a great retail or office space. The one-story, five-bay frame house built has a three-bay wide addition to the north side with identical finish. The façade to an eight-bay width and gives the impression of row-housing, a unique characteristic in a small southern town.

Additionally, Beth Yarbrough and Ashley Oliphant will give presentations at the Gaston County Museum (131 W. Main Street, Dallas, NC 28034 on the 3rd floor) on their new book, Jean Laffite Revealed: Unraveling One of America’s Longest Running Mysteries along with a book signing at 1pm and again at 3pm.
