Grand Visions: An Interview with Dirk Lohan about the Edith Farnsworth House

February 20, 2022

Join Michelangelo Sabatino, Professor of Professor of Architectural History and Cultural Heritage at Illinois Institute of Technology and Scott Mehaffey, Edith Farnsworth House Executive Director and Curator, in conversation with Dirk Lohan, grandson of Mies van der Rohe and Lord Palumbo’s restoration architect for the 1971-72 and 1996-97 restorations of the Edith Farnsworth House. During Dr. Farnsworth’s last years in Plano, and during the four years the house was on the market, the house deteriorated – and the landscape became a neglected mess. Peter Palumbo (later elevated to Baron by Margaret Thatcher) was only 36 when we took possession of Farnsworth House, and Dirk Lohan was only 33. Through the decades, they guided the development and maintenance of the 62-acre Farnsworth property, restoring the house again in 1996-97 after a devastating flood.

Sunday, February 20, 2-3:30 p.m. CST
$10 per person
