Are you struggling to understand Seattle’s historic preservation ordinance: grappling with the provisions of local zoning and Seattle’s Comprehensive Plan, or seeking procedures for dealing with local historic properties? Are online research resources reliable? Who is on the landmarks board anyway? Historic Seattle provides two full-day workshops so that you can learn from Seattle's top experts about what you can do to protect the community's built environment and honor your neighborhood's heritage.
Learn how to research buildings, structures, objects, and neighborhoods and how to make a legally defensible case for nominating a landmark or historic district. There will be an overview of Seattle’s diverse and unique historic resources, discussion of architectural styles, and an explanation of the differences between preservation, rehabilitation, and reconstruction and a review of the preservation achievements of the Seattle Department of Neighborhoods and the Landmarks Preservation Board. Learn about alternatives to designated historic buildings and neighborhoods, including conservation districts, and the value of surveys and inventories. Learn how to encourage local politicians to fund these endeavors to protect your neighborhood from insensitive infill construction. Presenters include professional historians, architects, city and county staff, City Landmarks Preservation Board members, neighborhood activists, construction contractors, landmark owners, and Historic Seattle staff and volunteers.
