Historic Porches of Portland
June 14, 2008 |
The glory years of the classic American porch were in the decades on either side of 1900. In addition to providing protection from the winter rain and summer sun, porches fulfilled many psychological and sociological needs as well.
Jack Bookwalter and Jane Morrison will look at the international roots of the American porch, discuss the changing roles it played in society, and view some of the styles of porches commonly found in older Portland neighborhoods. We will additionally look at how porches are constructed and how to best restore or renovate them. Roy and Kim Fox will share their re-creation of an appropriate porch for their 1884 Victorian-era farm house and the restoration of the porch on their 1923 bungalow.
For those seeking the COMPLETE porch experience, we’ll reconvene on the Foxes’ porch in the Piedmont area following the presentation (transportation not included). After sipping some Portland Punch and absorbing the civilized atmosphere of porch culture, we will embark on an optional walking tour of the surrounding porch-friendly neighborhood.
Pre-registration is required, either at our website or using the coupon in the newsletter.
