Asian American Designers in the Pacific Northwest

October 26, 2023

Join us in exploring the work and lives of Asian American designers in the Pacific Northwest in this online program.

Asian immigrants play a crucial role in the history of the United States, especially on the West Coast. Over time, the Asian American population has grown and established strong roots in their communities. Architecture and design have been significantly impacted by Asian American cultures and styles in the Pacific Northwest. Asian American designers have contributed to some of the most iconic modern buildings in this country, as well as to the regional architecture in the Northwest. Understanding how Asian American designers rose to prominence in the twentieth century helps expand on the modernist narrative in the Pacific Northwest, giving recognition to a vital community.

Our presenter is Valerie Stewart, who recently received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Architecture at the University of Washington. This past summer, under the guidance of UW Architecture Professor and Docomomo US/WEWA Board member and past president Tyler Sprague, Valerie researched and documented the work and lives of several Asian American architects and designers who practiced in Washington state, or were from the Pacific Northwest and educated here but practiced elsewhere in the country. Valerie will present her research in this online program. Learn more about Valerie and the project in this blog post.

The event is FREE but you’ll need to register in advance to gain access (the meeting is hosted by Zoom).
