Annual Meeting & Lecture: "Lost in America"

January 21, 2024
Annual Meeting & Lecture: "Lost in America"

Join us as we welcome Richard Cahan to discuss his book, Lost in America: Photographing the Last Days of Our Architectural Treasures. The book elaborates upon a wide array of historic structures that were saved on film by a group of photographers working for a government agency that dates back to the Works Progress Administration of the 1930s. Authors Richard Cahan and Michael Williams uniquely document significant architectural pieces that are no longer standing. Lost in America tells the story of each building in a simple but eloquent manner, using beautiful black-and-white photographs by the nation’s top architectural photographers, along with short descriptions of each building. It also reveals the story of the Historic American Buildings Survey, a federal agency that has documented more than 45,000 structures since the Depression era and continues to work to this day.

The lecture will be preceded by a brief meeting of the Wilmette Historical Society. This event is free and open to all. Guests can RSVP to the event below, and walk-in guests will also be welcome on the day of the event. We hope to see you there!
