Mies van der Rohe: Views of Nature
February 25, 2024 |
Mies van der Rohe’s work is often criticized for being “apart from” rather than “a part of” nature, but that is an overly simplistic characterization. His his fascination with botanist and microbiologist Raoul Heinrich Francé; his proposal to cover the Villa Tugendhat in the Czech Republic with climbing plants; his writings about living with nature in the Edith Farnsworth House in Plano, Illinois; and his collaborations with landscape architect Alfred Caldwell all reveal philosophical and practical views towards nature.
Dietrich Neumann, professor for the history of modern architecture and urban studies at the John Nicholas Brown Center of Public Humanities and Cultural Heritage at Brown University, discusses van der Rohe’s work and its relationship with nature.
