50th Anniversary Program: What's Shaking? Unreinforced Masonry Buildings and Retrofit Policies

January 24, 2024

The proliferation of unreinforced masonry (URM) buildings constructed after Seattle’s Great Fire of 1889 ensured entire blocks would never again fall to ashes. But what is the fate of the more than 1,100 unreinforced masonry buildings when the next big earthquake hits? How can we best protect the buildings and the people who occupy them?

Join us on Wednesday, January 24, from 4:30-6:00 pm, at the figurative epicenter of this critical topic: The Cadillac Hotel, saved and rehabilitated by Historic Seattle after the 2001 Nisqually Earthquake.

We’ll be joined by Steve Stroming, former Project Executive at the Rafn Company (general contractor for the restoration and rehabilitation of the Hotel after the quake), and Amanda Hertzfeld, the City of Seattle’s URM Program Manager.

Our discussion will take a look back at lessons learned from rehabilitating the Cadillac Hotel as well as the state of current and future URM seismic retrofit policies.

Wednesday, January 24
4:30 PM – 6:00 PM
In-Person (The Cadillac Hotel) $5
