Facing the Inferno: Visiting Artist Kari Greer

March 26, 2024
Facing the Inferno: Visiting Artist Kari Greer

The Pentacrest Museums host visiting artist Kari Greer for a special event to discuss themes of her exhibition Facing the Inferno: The Wildfire Photography of Kari Greer, now on display at the Old Capitol Museum. Greer will discuss her art, her career, firsthand knowledge of fire from the 1990s to today, and how photographic documentation impacts our collective understanding. Following her keynote, Greer will be joined by UI faculty from Carver College of Medicine and the colleges of Engineering, Liberal Arts and Sciences, and Public Health working on Living With Smoke, which examines the impacts of smoke on respiratory infections in the Western and Midwestern United States for a panel discussion and subsequent Q&A.

Old Capitol Museum galleries will open at 5:30 p.m. (come see the exhibit first)
Keynote and panel begin at 6 p.m.

Kari Greer is a contract photographer with the National Interagency Fire Center based in Boise, Idaho. Kari specializes in wildland fire photography and editorial photojournalism. Her interest in wildland fire photography was sparked during her college years, working on a Forest Service fire crew on the Gifford-Pinchot National Forest in Washington. Her work has appeared in numerous publications including Outside Magazine, National Geographic Adventure, Wildland Firefighter, and The New York Times. Kari has an online video interview in Yahoo Studios for The Weekly Flickr as well on CNN. Kari studied photography at California State University, Sacramento and spent time in a workshop with Mary Ellen Mark, collaborating with Icelandic Photographer Erla Stefánsdóttir and National Geographic photographer Brooks Walker.

The Pentacrest Museums are honored to show Greer's work and facilitate her visit to campus for educational programming. Please contact the museums to inquire about special class visits during her visit to Iowa City.
