2008 FALL “LIVING HISTORY” SEASON    

Fall Theme: “The People Choose: 1860 and 1900”
Date: September 16 to December 30, 2008 
Description: The political campaigns and debates of the two elections are brought to life in special exhibits and programming. Characters dressed in period costumes share their views on political issues of the era. More details soon at www.DallasHeritageVillage.org.  

Event: Gun Fights at the Village
Dates: TBA (at least 2 per month September 16 through December 30, 2008)
Description: Gun Fights are back twice a month on Saturdays this fall at the Village. Visitors will get a firsthand view of the “Wild West” when a mild disagreement concerning political issues of 1900 quickly turns into a gun fight on Main Street. Free with museum admission.  

Event: Nip and Tuck’s Barnyard Buddies Storytime for Preschoolers
Dates: Wednesday, September 10, 11 a.m.
Description: Named after Dallas Heritage Village’s Mammoth Jack Donkeys, Nip and Tuck, parents and preschoolers are invited to join us for a story or two and to make a craft relating to the month’s theme.  The theme for September is “Teddy Bear Tales.” We’ll be reading The Legend of the Teddy Bear by Frank Murphy and Town Teddy & Country Bear: A Classic Aesop’s Fable Retold by Kathleen Bart. $5 per participating child, includes admission to the museum; members are free. Event: Chautauqua Lecture Series: “Campaign Characters”
Date: Tuesday, September 16, 7 p.m. at the Dallas Central Library, 7th Floor
Description: Local historian, author and TCU professor emeritus, Paul Boller, shares humorous stories and anecdotes of Presidential candidates. Admission is $7 (includes garage parking). Additional Information and RSVP: 214-413-3674  

Event: Chautauqua Lecture Series: Village Readers Book Club
Date: September 23, 6 p.m. at the SMU Bookstore on Mockingbird
Description: The Village’s book club will meet and discuss Janice Woods Windle’s Will’s War, a compelling historical novel based on the life of her own grandfather. The protagonist is Will Bergfeld, a brash young man of German descent who is accused of treason and stands trial for his life in 1917, in the midst of the anti-German sentiment that ran rampant in small-town Texas during World War I. Event: Family Past Times
Date: Sunday, October 5, Noon – 4 p.m.
Description: The 1st Sunday of the month is free admission day at the Village.  Bring the whole family for historic fun and participate in themed activities for everyone to enjoy. The theme for October is “Past Time Prints.” Explore the Print Shop and learn how news was spread in the 1800s. Make your own important announcement using printing techniques.  

Event: Chautauqua Lecture Series: “Campaign Voices from the Past”
Date: Tuesday, October 7, 7 p.m.
Description: Rick Wilkins dives into his treasure trove of historic recordings and brings them to the Village’s Pilot Grove Church.  Hear the voices of past presidential candidates including Theodore Roosevelt and William Jennings Bryan, as well as a few humorous takes on our political process. Event: Civil War on the Home Front
Date: Saturday, November 8, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.; Civil Battle Re-Enactment at 2 p.m.
Description: Civil War on the Home Front provides families with a hands-on experience of the most exciting and volatile time in American history. Union and Confederate troops will conduct drills and share war stories. Hear tales of home life during the war from wives and children at the 1861 Farmstead. Crafts and artisan demonstrations help bring the past to life. Discount tickets online at www.DallasHeritageVillage.org late summer 2008.

Event: Chautauqua Lecture Series: Pilot Grove Lunch “Presidential Visits to Dallas”
Date: Tuesday, November 18, Noon
Description: President Kennedy’s fateful trip to Dallas in 1963 is well-known, but every U.S. president of the 20th century has visited Dallas, either as president, presidential candidate, or former president. Historian Sam Childers will talk about these visits beginning with President Theodore Roosevelt’s 1905 trip, through the city’s new role as the site of the George W. Bush Library and future home for President and Mrs. Bush.  

Event: Candlelight Senior Citizens Day
Date: December 11, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.
Description: Candlelight Senior Day is a holiday celebration full of special programming for senior citizens. Tour decorated homes from 1840 to 1910 and chat about holiday traditions was some of our historical costumed characters. Take a donkey-pulled surrey ride around the Village. Event: Candlelight
Date: December 13 and 14, 3 p.m. – 9 p.m.
Description: Candlelight is a holiday celebration for the entire family. Witness the holidays as they were celebrated from 1840-1910. Visit Mrs. Blum and learn the traditions of Hanukah. Learn the 1901 Tejano Catholic holiday traditions from Mrs. de Léon. Enjoy strolling carolers, telling St. Nicholas your Christmas wishes and riding around the Village in Nip and Tuck’s donkey pulled carriage. A special exhibit and demonstration of antique music boxes will be in the Pilot Grove Church. The kids can make an ornament for your tree or a dreidal to share with friends. Admission is $10 for adults, $8 for senior 65+, $5 for children 4-12, children under 4 and members are free. Discounted tickets available online in Fall 2008.

2009 SPRING “LIVING HISTORY” SEASON    

Spring Theme: “No Hand Idle: Domestic Arts in the 19th Century”
Date: February 16 to June 14, 2009
Description: A proud partner with 16 other DFW cultural institutions, “No Hand Idle” is a part of Quilt Mania II. Throughout the spring, special events and programming will center on the seasons theme.  Amongst the 1840 to 1910 historic homes and commercial buildings are 25 quilts from Dallas Heritage Village’s collection representing the progression of the art form as influenced by the evolving city we know today as Dallas. Included in the exhibit are patchwork quilts created by Dallas’ pioneer women to the more luxurious quilts of the Victorian era. Other forms of domestic arts from the 19th century will be on display as well.  More details soon at www.DallasHeritageVillage.org.

Event: American Arts and Crafts
Dates: Saturday, February 21, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Description: Explore the history of arts and crafts in Texas at Dallas Heritage Village.  Create a quilt square, see a blacksmith at work and learn some basic leatherworking techniques! Event: Chautauqua Lecture Series: Rebecca Sharpless
Dates: Tuesday, February 24, 7 p.m.
Description: Dr. Sharpless will explore women’s history through the quilts and other personal narratives. Admission is $5 per person. Additional Information: 214-413-3674 or email reservations@dallasheritagevillage.org  

Event: Village Academy: “The Sewing Circle”
Dates: Tuesday, March 17 & Saturday, March 28, 2 p.m.

Event: Village Academy: “Fabric Frenzy”
Dates: Saturday, March 14 & Saturday, March 21, 2 p.m.
Description: Children ages 6 to 8 will learn all about fabric—where it comes from, how it’s made and what it’s used for.  They’ll even get to make their own quilt and fabric creations to take home! Event: Village Academy: “Patch Works”
Dates: Tuesday, March 17 & Saturday, March 28, 2 p.m.
Description: In the 19th century, children couldn’t be wasteful!  Kids ages 4 to 5 will look at quilts, toys and other things in the Village made with fabric.  They’ll even make their own extraordinary creations out of ordinary scraps!
