Collaborate for A Cause III
October 22-24, 2018 |
On October 22 - 24, 2018, the historic Lancaster Cemetery will bring good people and grave matters together again! Like many graveyards, Lancaster Cemetery relies on the surrounding community to assist with beautification, cleanup, and grave marker repairs. Through a mutually beneficial project, grave marker enthusiasts, preservation advocates, and conservation specialists will have the opportunity to share their time, talent, and skills while making a difference at Lancaster Cemetery. Under the direction of Cemetery Conservator Robert Mosko, participants will be introduced to the baseline knowledge, theory, techniques, and materials that underpin gravestone preservation. The 3-day collaboration will also include hands-on training in cleaning headstones, and familiarize participants on volunteer level repair practices, and resetting fallen monuments. All skill levels are welcome.
Cemetery Preservationist and Conservator Robert Mosko will lead this hands-on workshop daily from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm at Lancaster Cemetery located at 205 E. Lemon Street, Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Robert is a third generation stone mason who attended the University of Maryland and has been practicing cemetery conservation for the past 20 years. He has successfully conserved, preserved and restored more then 78 cemeteries which involves more than 8,000 gravestones, monuments, and funerary structures. He is most sought after his cemetery assessment reports, master conservation and preservation plans, cemetery administrative and maintenance plans and his highly detained yet concise treatment reports and long term recommendations.
On Monday, October 22nd, Cemetery Conservator Robert Mosko will lead a full-day lecture and classroom instruction addressing cemetery safety, subsidence and erosion, landscape restoration and maintenance, types and styles of gravestones, weathering and deterioration processes and the general chemistry behind them, and condition and documentation practices. Then, on Tuesday and Wednesday October 23rd and 24th, the hands-on work portion will begin as Robert guides participants through documenting and the safe handling, moving and resetting of historic gravestones including a demonstration of basic engineering and rigging, raising and lifting sensitive markers, setting techniques, and appropriate setting materials and compounds. Assisting Mr. Mosko in the workshop will be Robert Myers from Grave Keepers located in Jeannette, Pennsylvania. Enthusiasts will also be introduced to conservation and preservation solutions along with safe work practices.
All participants are encouraged to bring work gloves and wear comfortable clothing and sturdy shoes suitable for varying weather conditions. Attendees are also responsible for providing their own meals., lodging, and transportation to and from Lancaster Cemetery.
The event is free and participants can register for one, two, or all three workshop days.
