Annual Meeting & Preservation Awards
May 18, 2019 |
(Santa Monica). The Santa Monica Conservancy will host its Annual Meeting & Preservation Awards at the Rustic Canyon Recreation Center (601 Latimer Road, Santa Monica) on Saturday, May 18, from 2-4 pm. The Conservancy will pay tribute to President Carol Lemlein for more than a decade of leadership and preservation success. The 2019 Preservation Awards will be presented, Board member and journalist Libby Motika will give an illustrated talk about the history of the Recreation Center, brief Board elections will be held and upcoming events and attractions will be previewed.
Once a secluded clubhouse and speakeasy, Rustic Canyon Recreation Center was part of the Uplifters Ranch, a weekend retreat for the elite members of the exclusive Uplifters Club. Founded in 1913 by Chicago plumbing magnate Harry Marston Haldeman, members of the club included Walt Disney, Clark Gable and L. Frank Baum, who named the club and wrote its anthem. Their creed was “to uplift art and promote good fellowship.”
Encompassing 120 acres, Uplifters Ranch included an amphitheater, private cottages, tennis courts, a swimming pool, trap shooting range and a Spanish Colonial-style clubhouse. The clubhouse was built in 1923 by noted area architect William J. Dodd, who also designed the San Gabriel Mission Auditorium, the Pacific Mutual Building in Downtown Los Angeles and, with famed Hearst Castle architect Julia Morgan, the Los Angeles Herald Examiner Building.
The event is free and will include a hospitality hour starting at 1 pm with mocktails and refreshments. RSVP online at www.smconservancy.org or email rsvp@smconservancy.org.
