Christopher H. Browne Charleston Drawing Tour

March 12, 2020

The ICAA’s drawing and study courses are built around the tradition of field drawing in sketchbook using methods that have been deployed by practitioners of architecture and allied disciplines since the Renaissance. Then, as now, the objective is to expand one’s compendium of precedents as resources for reference in contemporary design.

This 3-day course is part of an expansion of the ICAA’s Drawing Tours in Rome and Paris to travel to important American destinations, and follows on the 2019 Christopher H. Browne Colonial Williamsburg Drawing Tour. This year’s program provides an opportunity to study, through field drawing, the architecturally rich environs of Charleston, South Carolina - a laboratory of American classical and traditional design, building, and planning from the 18th century to the present day.

Each day is structured around the study of representative examples of building types that form the fabric of Charleston, with a focus on their composition, detail, and contribution to the urbanism and landscape of the city. Throughout the course, the role of the building arts in the fields of plaster, metal, wood, and masonry as factors that give form to the city’s distinctive architectural character will be highlighted.

More information regarding this Drawing Tour will be announced soon. Should you have any questions about the program, please contact us at education@classicist.org.
