Heritage Cabin Preservation & Assembly

November 9-11, 2020
Heritage Cabin Preservation & Assembly
During this workshop, the “Chestnut Bluff Log Cabin”, built in the early 1800’s, will be re-assembled for reuse. It is a typical Southern “dogtrot style” building.

Attendees will be utilizing scoring axes, broad axes, adzes, chisels and other hand tools to repair/replace ‘in-kind’ the damaged and missing portions of this historic cabin.
   1. New plate logs and tie beams will be hewn and fitted.
   2. New rafters will be ‘paired’ and ‘seated’ to the plate logs.
   3. Other traditional joinery, including wedged scarf joints, will be incorporated into the work.

During the workshop, Historic Preservation Standards and Guidelines will be referred to extensively.

DAVID ROGERS and DOUGLASS REED have each been working with wood since 1972. Both are remarkably experienced preservationists and instructors. Besides continuing to do log preservation work, David recently created The Cascadian School of Log Building Design in Rhododendron, Oregon. Doug is an author, a preservation consultant, architectural historian, craftsman, teacher and technical consultant. His business, Preservation Associates, Inc., is based in Mercersburg, Pennsylvania.
