Heritage Conservation and Carbon Reduction: The Climate Crisis and Moving towards Zero Net Carbon

October 1-4, 2020
Heritage Conservation and Carbon Reduction: The Climate Crisis and Moving towards Zero Net Carbon
This is THE workshop for anyone involved in the stewardship of existing and historic buildings, to get on board and up-to-speed with major climate action contributions. The Heritage Conservation/ Preservation community is positioned well to lead the way towards the de-carbonization of existing and historic buildings, which account for a massive share of carbon emissions. Many individuals and organizations are working to seize the technical and design tools and solutions for reuse, rehabilitation and retrofit.

Conversations about sustainable design trend disproportionately towards operational efficiency; however, amidst increasing goals of zero net carbon, it is critical to account for the environmental impacts of every stage of a building's life, including embodied value and end of life costs. Therefore, the industry needs metrics that are more comprehensive for building reuse vs. new construction.

The workshop will include a deep dive into Greenhouse Gas emissions associated with reusing and upgrading existing & historic buildings:
  • Embodied and Operational Greenhouse Gas Emissions associated with Reuse;
  • Avoided Embodied and Operational Greenhouse Gas Emissions associated with Reuse vs. Replacement – How does Building Reuse compare to New Construction and what are the Operational savings over time?

Learning Objectives:
  • Identify current critical sustainability initiatives, emerging carbon-fighting tools and calculators, and assess their benefits to designing projects in your community;
  • Determining an appropriate life cycle analysis duration for examining heritage buildings;
  • Implementing energy retrofits and applying latest related building science & systems to your project;
  • Integrating both technical and human aspects of energy efficiency, decarbonization, use and reuse, adaptation and evolution, sustainability and meaningful conservation into a project;
  • Identify analyze and build upon existing metrics with respect to sustainability and green building.
