State History Group Hosts Fundraiser at Vintage Drive-In
All Proceeds of Public Event Support Historic Preservation Efforts
Middle River, MD (September 2, 2020) – Since 1931, Preservation Maryland has worked to protect and promote Maryland’s history and heritage. Throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, the organization has continued its important community-focused work – providing financial support to hard-hit museums and historic sites, purchasing a historic cabin for restoration, and advocating for recovery funds for historic communities and cultural intuitions.
To safely bring together Marylanders to celebrate our shared history, Preservation Maryland is hosting a one-night-only public event at the historic Bengies Drive-In in Middle River, Maryland on Friday, October 1, 2020. Bengies Drive-In opened in 1956 and is still family-owned and operated – boasting the largest screen in the United States.
The family-friendly program will include vintage cartoons and Maryland movie trivia, a celebration of the organization’s Best of Maryland Awards 2020 from across the state, and the feature film, “The Money Pit.” The 1980s classic starring Tom Hanks is a nod to the challenging and sometimes humorous nature of saving old buildings. Complimentary popcorn and fountain soda will be provided thanks to our generous event sponsors.
Executive Director of Preservation Maryland Nicholas Redding, stated, “History provides context during difficult times and in moments like this, we need it more than ever before. At Bengies, we’ll celebrate our award winners and safely bring together Marylanders who care about the unique places that make Maryland the special place we all call home.” Continuing he explained, “With our events scheduled for earlier in the year canceled, it is also no secret that like many non-profits, Preservation Maryland is looking to our members and neighbors for support – and we think that coming to the drive-in is a safe and fun way to support our mission.”
Gates open at 6PM. Movie at 7:30PM. Tickets are $75/car. On sale at: presmd.org/drivein.
