Brutalism & The Public University: Past, Present and Future

October 22-23, 2021
Brutalism & The Public University: Past, Present and Future
Brutalism + the Public University: Past, Present and Future is a two-day collaborative symposium to be held at UMass Dartmouth on Friday, October 22, 2021 and at UMass Amherst on Saturday, October 23, 2021. This two-day symposium will provide a unique platform that brings together nation-wide scholars, industry professionals and passionate citizens with an interest in Brutalist architecture and preservation of the architectural icons. The symposium’s goal is to create a dynamic, cross-disciplinary conversation among all participants on how we may conserve and provide stewardship of our buildings in the future.

Topics include history and significance, landscape and site considerations, interiors, sustainability, building systems and material conservation. Participants can attend sessions, panels, tours of both campuses, and engage with other participants through multiple receptions.

Keynote speakers will be from the Getty Conservation Institute with sponsorship and support from Docomomo US/New England, The Paul Rudolph Heritage Foundation and The Association for Preservation Technology Northeast. AIA HSW credits available.
