Peña Adobe Historical Society Welcomes The Buffalo Soldiers!

October 2, 2021
Peña Adobe Historical Society Welcomes The Buffalo Soldiers!
Company G of the 10th Cavalry, better known to history as the Buffalo Soldiers, will be riding out of western history and into Peña Adobe Park on Oct. 2 for the first time.

They will be joined by the mounted volunteers Solano County Sheriff’s Posse and their horses at the Peña Adobe Historical Society monthly open house.

The Buffalo Soldiers are a living history group that was established in the Sacramento area almost 30 years ago. The group recreates the black cavalry units that served in the Old West from 1866 to 1891.

The black cavalrymen were given their nickname by the American Indians because the black men’s dark hair was so similar to the buffalo’s winter coats and the color of the cavalrymen’s skin.

Company G’s goal is to tell the story of the Buffalo Soldiers’ history visiting schools, community organizations, churches and public events.

They will have two tables with artifacts of the buffalo soldiers’ history on display and members, dressed in the uniforms of that time, will be on hand to talk with park visitors.

The Sheriff’s Posse has been part of the Solano County Sheriff’s Office for more than 70 years and is comprised of volunteers who use their horses and equipment to help the department with search-and-rescue efforts, emergency services and as public ambassadors.

Scott Griffin of the Fairfield-based Griffin Coin Company will be exhibiting portions of his collection of Civil War-era coins at the open house.  Under the direction of Terry and Leslie Cloper, the Vacaville Jammers will provide music while park visitors meet
descendants of one of the first settlers in Vacaville, the Peña family!

The Peña Adobe, built by pioneer Juan Felipe Peña in 1842, is Vacaville’s oldest existing structure. The park is home to the Mowers-Goheen Museum which preserves the area’s early history and will be open to visitors on Oct. 2.

The open house runs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the park which is located in Lagoon Valley at the end of Peña Adobe Road. For more information, call 1-707-447-0518, penaadobe@gmail.org or go to www.penaadobe.org.
